And here comes another plaque!

We have now placed seven Spitfire Makers blue plaques and we have four more ready to go up soon in Southampton.

The first of these to be unveiled will be to commemorate the sadly-now-demolished Supermarine Flight Shed. Our efforts to save it, including the petition which gathered nearly 56,000 signatures, were ultimately unsuccessful.

As followers of the Spitfire Makers will know, we always try to have people who worked for Supermarine in that location, or their family members, with us for the unveiling.

If you know of anyone who worked in the Flight Shed, either for Supermarine or, in later years, like our sponsor Peter Grubb, for Ford, please send us a private message, preferably with your email address and we will forward you details of the time and place.

The plaque will be placed in Wide Lane, close to other commemorative information, on one of the old entrance gate pillars to the Flight Shed which became Gate B of the Ford Works.

Pictured are Peter and his wife Margaret after unpacking the plaque in their home last week, some past images of the Flight Shed and showing where the plaque will be fixed.

Spitfire Makers unveiled their latest Blue Plaque yesterday on Wide Lane in Swaythling, it commemorates the Supermarine Flight Shed (1937-2023)

A great turn out of enthisiasts including many who had worked in the Flight Shed (including when Ford used the Hangar as a Toolroom) or were relatives of Supermariners like Bernie Byrne who worked there during WW2.

The plaque is on one of the gate posts of the main gates into the Cunliffe Owen factory that led to The Flight Shed.
