Today we pause to remember Bernard ‘Bernie’ Byrne (1926 – 2021).

Friends and family will gather to say goodbye to Bernie as he makes his final journey to Wessex Vale Crematorium at 10-45am.

The Spitfire Makers pennant is our tribute to, “A normal working class chap from an Eastleigh council estate … (who) led a remarkable life.

“We know his son Rob is grateful that his father is being remembered in this way and, although plans for a Spitfire fly past have been scuppered, our friends at the BBMF have kindly invited family members to visit them at RAF Coningsby when the pandemic clears up. (Thanks to our Patron and all at the BBMF for arranging this.)

Bernie survived the Luftwaffe bombs and strafing but he could not survive Covid-19 so today we “tip our wings” and salute Spitfire Maker Bernie.
